Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Natural resource conflicts are prevalent in regions with abundant but contested resources, often leading to disputes over ownership, access, and usage. In Nigeria, Jos East LGA in Plateau State has witnessed significant conflicts stemming from competing claims over land, water, and mineral resources. These conflicts disrupt socio-economic stability, exacerbate poverty, and threaten communal coexistence. Public Relations (PR) plays a vital role in conflict management by fostering dialogue, promoting mutual understanding, and facilitating collaborative problem-solving among stakeholders.
PR strategies, such as stakeholder engagement, conflict-sensitive communication, and peacebuilding campaigns, can address grievances and reduce tensions. Recent studies underscore the efficacy of PR in mitigating natural resource conflicts by building trust and ensuring equitable resource allocation (Abubakar & Danlami, 2023). However, the extent to which PR has been employed to manage resource conflicts in Jos East LGA remains underexplored. This study aims to evaluate the role of PR in managing natural resource conflicts and propose strategies for sustainable conflict resolution.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The recurring natural resource conflicts in Jos East LGA pose significant challenges to peace and development. Efforts to resolve these conflicts are often hampered by inadequate communication, lack of trust among parties, and limited engagement of stakeholders. While PR offers tools for effective conflict management, its application in the region is insufficiently documented. This study seeks to investigate how PR can be effectively utilized to manage and resolve natural resource conflicts in Jos East LGA.
